DJI Zenmuse X7: The first Super 35mm camera for drones

DJI Zenmuse X7 - A Super 35mm camera for Inspire 2.

DJI has just launched their DJI Zenmuse X7That is the world's first Super 35mm camera built specifically for drones. It is first and foremost designed for DJI's Inspire 2 drone and offers among other substitute lenses as well as a new DJI Cinema Color system for several creative options in the editing.

Here you can see a video with DJI's presentation of X7:

DJI describes Zenmuse X7 as "the highest resolution on the market in an integrated drone camera". It consists of a Super 35mm sensor that can record video in 6K CinemaDNG RAW or 5.2K ProRes for up to 30 fps. In addition, it can record 3.9K CinemaDNG RAW or 2.7K ProRes for up to 59.94 fps.

The new Super 35mm sensor delivers 14-stop dynamic range with good characteristics when shooting in a little light. With such a dynamic range, the camera should be perfect for shooting high-contrast motifs and maintaining much detail in both highlights and shadows.

DJI's Senior Product Manager, Paul Pan said at the presentation that "Zenmuse X7 offers professional photographers everything they need to be able to record the lifelike and amazing footage that they require". "The Great Super 35mm sensor, the new DL-mount, lenses and DJI Cinema Color system as the Zenmuse X7 offers, now provides video manufacturers and professional photographers tools that were not before possible, and they can now easily make recordings with a Inspire 2 drone and get a Quality that can be easily integrated with material from the leading manufacturers of handheld cameras ".

The new camera makes use of DJI's new "DL-Mount". It has an ultra short distance between lens and sensor and is designed for lenses with fixed aperture.

DJI has made a short video showing what the camera can:

DJI launched simultaneously 4 new lenses: 16mm, 24mm, 35mm and 50mm each with a largest aperture of f/2.8 and is made in carbon fiber for strength and least possible weight. The 16mm lens has a built-in ND filter, and the other three have mechanical shutter. A crop-factor of x 1.5 corresponds to a 16mm on a Super 35mm sensor for a Full Frame 24mm.

The new DJI Cinema Color system will benefit the Color grading and will also be available for the DJI X5S camera – presumably in the form of a software upgrade of the drone's built-in CineCore to Ver. 2.1.

"We've taken our video production to the next level," said Paul Pan at DJI's presentation yesterday. "We have sought advice from authorities in colour and image processing as Technicolor. With their advice our engineers could develop an optimized gamma curve for X7 that can deliver more without compromising image quality. "

The new Cinema Color system features a new D-Log Curve and a D-Gamut in RGB color spectrum and it should be able to deliver more flexibility in post-production.

There is also a new EI Mode that tries to reproduce the way a normal film camera works as it "picks up as much information as possible" in each type of subject while it balances the dynamic range in terms of noise.

Zenmuse X7 camera and gimbal system weighs 631 gr with a 16mm lens and will, according to DJI, have a flight time of 23 minutes. Our experience, however, is that you can start by pulling just over 10% from your enlightened flight times, so about 19 minutes is probably more realistic.

DJI Zenmuse X7 camera is just set for sale on their website. The camera and lenses can all be purchased separately, or you can buy a Kombo package with the camera and all four lenses and save next €1,000.

The camera is expected to be delivered mid-November.

Airflix has, of course, already ordered a X7And we look forward to being able to do a test of it and tell a lot more here since then follow the final.

What did you think? is X7 overkill or a must-have?
