DxO tester now also drone cameras and compares them with traditional cameras, so you can see how good, or bad, they really are.

Photographers know DxO as a very serious and professional page where you always can get a technical and vocational objective test of various cameras and compare cameras against each other.

Now they are also beginning to test drone cameras.

As the drone photography has become more popular, manufacturers provide a wide selection of products that can meet the need. To help you get an overview of the available drones, we have tested the quality of the drone photos as some of the most popular drone cameras can deliver.

DxO has tested these drone cameras
  • DJI Zenmuse X5S
  • DJI Zenmuse X4S
  • DJI Phantom 4 Pro
  • DJI Phantom 4
  • GoPro Hero 5
  • Yuneec Breeze

Four of the six cameras are from DJI, so if one is examining the drone you have to buy, this is a good place to start. The relationship fits very well with the number of sold drones because DJI is estimated to sell 80% of all consumer drones in the world.

However, it is too bad that DxO did not test MAVIC Pro, which is perhaps the most popular drone currently. But it may be it will come later.

Drone Camera Test

So what did DxO's test results tell us then? Naturally, they showed that DJI Inspire 2 with DJI Zenmuse X5S is a great drone camera. It can record video in up to 5.2K and has specifications comparable to the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II which cost around DKK 15,000.

You can also see that Phantom 4 Pro and Zenmuse X4S are the same camera, just with better glass on the X4S, and they perform equally in tests with difficult lighting conditions.

The old model, Phantom 4, faring much better than the GoPro Hero 5, and it does not bode well for GoPro has just re-launched their Karma drone with Hero 5 after a terrible launch where their drones fell out of the air and had to be withdrawn.

Last stand Yuneec Breeze back with the lowest score and can virtually only be compared with the camera on a Nokia phone.
